Cave of the Skulls
The cave is located in the municipality of Benidoleig, in the Marina Alta region. Discovered by chance in 1768 by a local farmer, it was not until the 1920s that archaeological excavations were carried out inside. At that time, the first human remains were discovered, and in the following decades, most of the skulls that can be seen today were found. The most accepted theory is that the Cave of the Skulls was used as a burial site in prehistoric times. The human remains found date back to about 5,000 years ago and correspond to the Neolithic culture. It is believed that the bodies were placed in the cave to decompose, and once only the bones remained, the heads were removed to be placed elsewhere. This explains the presence of so many skulls in the cave. Although the Cave of the Skulls is not very large, with only about 400 meters in length, its interior is spectacular. The stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years create impressive shapes and figures that make the visit a unique experience. In addition, the cave is equipped with a lighting system that enhances the beauty of the formations. To visit the cave, it is necessary to make a prior reservation, as it is a protected and controlled space. Guided tours are conducted in small groups, ensuring a personalized and exclusive experience. Furthermore, audio guides are available for visitors who want to learn more details about the cave and its history. In conclusion, the Cave of the Skulls is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, archaeology, or nature. Its historical significance makes it a very special place, capable of transporting us to ancient times and making us feel a part of the history of humanity.
